Shipwreck, August 26, 1725
ECU WITH 8 L'S
SEPT 1724 - DEC 1725
23.59 GRAMS of SILVER 917/1000 FINE
VALUED at 80 SOLS
ENGRAVER-GENERAL was NORBERT ROETTIERS
On August 26, 1725 the ship Le Chameau, a royal vessel en route from Rochefort to Quebec, sank off the coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, carrying among other things, a shipment of specie reportedly valued at 80,000 Livres. In 1965 the bulk of the coin was recovered from the wreck and in December, 1971 the silver and most of the gold was sold at auction in New York City.
The silver coins consisted almost entirely of Ecus with 8 L's were corroded, for the most part, beyond recognition. Somewhat more than 6000 ecus were salvaged, of which no more than 200 specimens could be considered even remotely of interest to the collector; that is, identifiable to date and mint.
About 80% of the attributable pieces proved to be of the single variety 1725 - H {La Rochelle Mint}.
The other specimens comprised a mixture dated 1724 and 1725 from mints located principally in west-central France; in all, only eight different mintmarks could be identified.
