 U.S.A. 1828 Half Cent
U.S.A. 1828 Half Cent: CLASSIC HEAD; Designed by the talented French engraver John Reich (1768-1833). He sold himself into servitude to escape the wars in Europe and get to the United States. He was hired by the Mint for $600 a year and in 1807 he started changing the designs of all the coins. Some 19th century numismatist thought Liberty looked like Dolly Madison (wife of the 4th President James Madison). But modern thought leans towards ancient Greek statues of young male athletes wearing a fillet, a narrow ribbon given as award. Liberty's has her name on it. On the reverse is a Christmas wreath and '1/200' of a dollar.
This particular half cent was part of hoard discovered by Benjamin H. Collins. In 1894 he came across a bag of $5.00, all in half cents. One was dated 1811 and 999 were brand new 1828s. He slowly sold them to coin collectors and when the holdings of F.C.C. Boyd were sold in 1955 the last few hundred entered the market.
